Why the government won’t ban PwC from federal work

Embattled global consulting firm PwC won’t be banned outright from federal work by the Albanese government, which insists the scandal is not a procurement issue and its response is therefore limited.

A looming criminal inquiry has also limited its action, with departments reluctant to demand the names of PwC staff involved to avoid prejudicing an investigation by the Australian Federal Police.

The response to the growing scandal came under scrutiny at Senate Estimates hearings last week, with senators criticising a reliance on PwC to “clean up the thing that they’ve been trying to hide” and questioning just how unethical a supplier would have to be to be banned from lucrative federal contracts.
