‘We need to learn how those machines work’: Auditor facing AI headache

The national audit office has ruled out using artificial intelligence for consequential decisions and won’t deploy generative tools at all until a thorough risk assessment has been completed, as other agencies’ use creates new oversight challenges.

Last year, more than a dozen federal agencies were found by the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) to have been using AI without specific policies to mitigate the risks the technology brings.

Acting auditor general Rona Mellor on Wednesday declined to name the entities her office had flagged in its report, but said she is considering requests from Parliamentary committees to identify them.
