Data brokering threatens to harm consumers and competition, the ACCC has warned after taking a closer look at a murky industry that stretches from Big Tech to local government.
The risks include Australians being locked out of services by complex ‘take it or leave it’ privacy policies, de-identified data skirting privacy laws and then consumers being re-identified, and vertically integrated tech giants squeezing markets.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission did not make any recommendations in its report on data products and services, which was released Tuesday. But the watchdog continues to push the Albanese government for mandatory codes for platform companies.
