Voice misinformation waived through by platforms: Report

Online platforms Facebook, TikTok and Twitter are allowing misinformation about the Voice to Parliament to run as paid advertisements, raising fresh questions about content moderation ahead of new regulator powers, according to a new report.

Digital rights group Reset Australia said it ran an experiment that put forward paid-for ads “laden with misinformation” about next month’s voice referendum to see if the three platforms would approve them.

The erroneous ads contained content like an incorrect date for the referendum, that electronic voting systems will be used or that the Australian Electoral Commission overseeing the vote had been found guilty of electoral fraud.
