Using First Nation’s thinking to expand Western STEM frameworks

The government’s Diversity in STEM Review is striving not just for gender equity but for a re-think of what STEM means by integrating First Nations thinking with the institutionalised Western approach, according to review panel member Mikaela Jade.

As one of the three members of the government’s independent Pathway to Diversity in STEM Review panel, Ms Jade brings her experience as a cyberneticist and environmental biologist. She is also the founder of Indigital, Australia’s first Indigenous Digital Skills training program, and a proud Cabrogal woman of the Dharug-speaking nations of Sydney.

Ms Jade is advocating for a holistic approach to STEM that integrates the cultural knowledge and practices of underrepresented groups at every level of the value stack of technology. She said the Western value stack of technology has five layers starting from infrastructure and network before building through software and platforms, digital identity, economy, and experience.
