Subsea autonomous vehicle makers get an underwater sandbox

Australia’s autonomous underwater vehicle sector took a “world-leading” step last month, with a permit-free testing zone launched off the coast of Queensland, greatly diminishing barriers to research and development.

Industry leaders expect the reduction in cost and time needed to navigate regulatory hurdles would enable significant increases to R&D investment and accelerate companies’ production and the path to commercialisation.

The Australian Institute of Marine Science’s (AIMS) ReefWorks inshore test range near Townsville is the first to be granted approval by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) through a proposed regulatory sandbox to allow permit-free testing and evaluation for the next five years.
