Social media ban: Platforms could be left to ‘infer’ age

Social media platforms could use information they already hold about an individual to infer whether that user is under 16, avoiding the need to collect further identification or biometric data for the age limit ban, a Senate inquiry has heard.

Amid concerns about how the proposed law would work in the absence of results from the age assurance trial, government officials on Monday confirmed such an approach would likely meet the definition of “reasonable steps”.

It comes as the Digital Industry Group (DIGI), an association representing Meta, Apple, Twitter and Google, faced blowback from senators over positioning of the debate in term of mental health when the platforms have a commercial interest in blocking the laws.
