Services Aus doesn’t need to be best AI innovator: Hazlehurst

Eight months into the leadership role at Services Australia, David Hazlehurst says the agency doesn’t need to be at “nosebleed cutting edge” of AI innovation when successful practices can be adapted from industry partners.

Addressing an Australian Information Industry Association event on Monday, Mr Hazlehurst said he’d “much rather watch others and learn from them”, but noted that “there will be more that we automate, there will be more that we use AI for”.

As development on the agency’s 10-year ICT strategy begins, Services Australia is approaching consultation with a philosophy of “bringing the outside in”, meaning technology partners and other stakeholders are consulted earlier in the capability design process.

Sounds like a good plan. But how do we know it’s a good plan? There is no independent review, no debate, industry might be consulted but how do we know good choices are being made.

Industry isn’t going to make waves – push the boundaries. Rule 1 of business, don’t annoy your client.

In industry we have boards, the tension of the market, public disclosure for public companies….. none of that here.

Rely on a politician? Policy is their domain. Not equipped to govern the complexity of implementation.

We will see what industry does and learn from them? Not sure that’s enough or we, the public, should accept that as reasonable. Of course we should learn from others, but it shouldn’t be the only path.

It’s not that i think the approach is entirely wrong, just not confident it is as right as can be.
