Senate showdown for FMiA as Coalition rejects bill

Crossbench senators have called for a significant rework of the federal government’s signature Future Made in Australia plan, setting up a Senate showdown as early as the coming week.

A Labor-led Senate committee on Friday recommended the passage of legislation that paves the way for a new era of interventionist industry policy, but the Greens and independents want significant changes to guarantee their support.

The Coalition has already signalled that it will vote against the Future Made in Australia (FMiA) Bill and doubled down in its dissenting report, leaving the government to negotiate with the crossbench to get it passed through the Senate.
