Laws allowing the federal government to legally operate its document and face matching systems are facing an uphill battle in the Senate, with the Greens and the Coalition backing calls for a “higher standard” of privacy protections in the bill.
Both parties have endorsed changes that would see the Identity Verification Services (IVS) Bill mimic the privacy protections in the proposed Digital ID Bill, which legal and digital rights groups consider to be far superior.
Greens Senator David Shoebridge has already presented amendments to this effect to be moved when the bill is next debated. The government had intended to bring the bill on for debate on Tuesday but InnovationAus.com understands this will not longer happen.
