A security clearance backlog created by the federal government’s new vetting platform is jeopardising the ability of Australia’s cyber spy agency to secure the hundreds of new staff it needs for REDSPICE.
Fronting Senate Estimates on Tuesday night, Australian Signals Directorate director-general Rachel Noble acknowledged that the technical issues plaguing the myClearance system meant that the agency is “not in as strong a position” as it could otherwise be.
As part of the $9.9 billion Resilience, Effects, Defence, Space, Intelligence, Cyber and Enables (REDSPICE) project funded in last year’s March Budget, ASD take on 1,900 new staff by 2029, doubling its defensive cyber capabilities and tripling of its offensive cyber capabilities.
