National science institutions, a radio telescope program, and a handful of biosecurity and medical research projects enjoyed a boost in Jim Chalmers’ fourth Budget, which lacked a significant response to wider R&D challenges.
Tuesday’s Budget included $150 million for cancer research and clinical trials, surprise boosts totaling $55 million for the embattled CSIRO, and a capital works investment for some of the most precise measurement and testing facilities in the country.
But the Budget lacked the bold policy and research infrastructure support that the sector had sought in response to a long-term plunge in government and business investment.
