Review of ‘rock bottom’ R&D waiting on govt sign-off

A sweeping review of Australia’s faltering research and development system won’t be completed for at least a year, as government and overall R&D investment levels slump to record lows.

Officials on Thursday confirmed proposed terms of reference for the review announced in May are waiting on approval from the Albanese government and no experts have been tapped for a panel to steward the work.

Amid the six month and counting take off period, the government has begun reaching out to dozens of research stakeholders. But formal submissions to the review will need to wait for a discussion paper and any government decisions from its final report won’t arrive until late-2025 at the earliest.
