Rehome growth centres to CSIRO: WA chief scientist

Australia’s Industry Growth Centres should be given a new lease of life within the CSIRO to uplift practical research outcomes in Australia, according to the longest sitting government chief scientist in Australia.

Western Australia’s chief scientist Professor Peter Klinken, who has served in the role for more than a decade, believes the national science agency should put greater emphasis on delivering outcomes for industry alongside its historical focus on basic research excellence.

He said the CSIRO could help provide a clear pathway for taking basic research to a pre-commercial stage and towards industrial usefulness by integrating the Industry Growth Centres, serving a similar role to the applied research focused Fraunhofer institutes in Germany.
