A quantum skunkworks should be stood up in NSW to reinforce the state’s reputation as a global hub for the nascent technology by translating research into new commercial spinouts, according to a new report commissioned by the state’s chief scientist.
Amid growing competition for quantum investment both internationally and in neighboring states like Queensland, the report suggests that a new research institute could be a way to grow the state’s research output.
The report, penned by University of Technology Sydney professors Michael Bremner and Simon Devitt on behalf of the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer, lays out a path for Australia and in particular NSW to further capitalise on its world-leading quantum roots.
