Australia’s chief scientist Dr Cathy Foley is driving reform of the performance metrics for researchers and research institutions with the release of a new report that outlines existing barriers to innovation and the foundations for change.
Dr Foley said the “current system for assessing research careers for hiring, promotion and funding is not fit for purpose” as it focuses too heavily on “the number of citations and journal status, as well as success in grant funding rounds”.
While Australia’s research assessment systems recognises the production of high-quality research, it has also raised several barriers to innovation, collaboration and risky research, and the career mobility of women and under-represented groups.
