Outcomex sets standard for ransomware response

It wasn’t long after Outcomex had told one of its clients that its cybersecurity measures needed to be replaced and improved that the client was hit by a ransomware attack.

The client had ignored the advice of the New South Wales-based systems integrator and had not budgeted for a cyber uplift, leaving it vulnerable to the ransomware attack.

After being notified of the breach, Outcomex’s cybersecurity team kicked into gear and activated its incident response protocol, isolating the impacted systems and files in order to prevent further spread of the ransomware.

It then employed advanced data recovery tools in order to retrieve the encrypted files that were being held to ransom.

This successfully ensured the integrity of the data and minimised the loss of data. The data wasa later recovered, avoiding the need for the company to pay the hacker’s ransom.

“Their innovative and resilient approach not only protected the client’s data but also set a new standard in ransomware response and cybersecurity defence,” Outcomex said.

Following the cyber attack, Outcomex also worked with the client to implement improved security measures, and provided the company with a comprehensive report about the attack, the response and the lessons that should be heeded.

This was par for the course for Outcomex, which has built up a reputation for delivering bespoke and intuitive solutions to its wide range of customers across professional services, and managed services in networking, cybersecurity, collaboration, data centre and Internet of Things.

Outcomex is a finalist in the Cybersecurity category at the InnovationAus 2024 Awards for Excellence. You can secure your tickets to the black-tie gala event here.

Ransomware attacks have become an common occurrence in day-to-day life in Australia, and are a constant threat for businesses of all shapes and sizes.

According to the latest Zscaler ThreatLabz Ransomware Report, there was a near-20 percent increase in ransomware attacks in the last year, with industries targeted including manufacturing, healthcare and technology.

The Australian Signals Directorate’s 2022-23 report said the agency had responded to 118 ransomware extortion-related incidents, and that 10 percent of these incidents involved ransomware.

There have also been a number of high-profile data breaches as a result of ransomware attacks that have impacted millions of Australians, including the Optus, Medibank and MediSecure hacks.

It’s Outcomex’s goal to shore up the cyber defences of Australian companies to protect from attacks such as these. It does this by focusing on the specific needs of its clients and providing bespoke and intuitive solutions, rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all model.

Outcomex has established an in-house software engineering team that is responsible for development, API build, refinement and integration, and the development of new products. The team can also audit a business’s policies, processes, technologies and employees to determine its cybersecurity resilience.

The effectiveness of Outcomex’s offering has already been recognised with a number of awards. The company won the 2023 IoT Alliance Australia IoT Awards in Food, Agriculture and Transport, and the Cisco ANZ Partner Innovation Challenge 2022.
