‘Out of our depth’: Calls for Australia to stop work on AI regulation

Australia should “stop all efforts” to regulate artificial intelligence according to one of the country’s leading authorities on the subject, who says it remains too early to grasp the true impact of the technology on society.

Professor Mary-Anne Williams, an eminent AI researcher and the Michael J Crouch Chair in Innovation at the University of NSW, made the comments during a heated panel session on AI in journalism at South by Southwest Sydney on Thursday.

“Australia should stop all efforts [to regulate AI] because, first of all, we’re out of our depth. We are not leaders in this technology. We haven’t invested in AI,” she said in response to a question on the need for regulation.
