Australia’s second largest telco has asked the government to step in and make tech giants like Netflix and Facebook pay a “fair share” contribution to the telecommunications infrastructure that carries their content.
Optus has told the current Senate inquiry into international digital platforms that either usage charges, negotiated settlements akin to the News Media Bargaining Code or a “digital levy” should be paid by the streaming companies.
According to the telco, which foreshadowed the call last month, it is needed to sustain telecommunications infrastructure as traffic increases but traditional revenue sources dry up.
