Opposition targets social media, alcohol with age assurance tech

An Opposition bill that would force the government to trial age assurance technology to protect children from online pornography would also require it to be piloted for online gambling, alcohol sales and social media.

The Coalition’s attempt to force a trial, or at least force the government to vote against one, comes as Communications minister Michelle Rowland emphasises the government hasn’t fully ruled one out.

The jockeying in Parliament, growing calls from child safety groups and similar efforts overseas means a government trial of the controversial technology now appears more likely than ever in Australia.
