NSW waters down government AI risk regime

The New South Wales government has tweaked its AI guidance for public servants and will now require that only systems with high levels of residual risk undergo external review.

The regime, which will come into effect in October, places new focus on “elevated risk” following the arrival of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

It is detailed in the state’s NSW AI assessment framework, which replaces the AI assurance framework introduced in early 2022 to assist agencies to design, build and use bespoke AI systems safely.
