NSW local councils still lack basic cyber controls

Dozens of local councils across New South Wales are still without basic cybersecurity controls and governance arrangements more than three years after the state’s Auditor-General first raised the alarm.

But the NSW Auditor-General has started to see improvements, with further progress expected following the long-awaited release of cybersecurity guidelines by the Office of Local Government late last year.

In its latest annual audit of the local government sector, the Auditor-General found 63 councils were “yet to implement basic governance and internal controls to manage cybersecurity” in the 2021-22 financial year.
