New rules to slash approval times for $1b space sector

Licences to launch rockets into space from Australia will be granted earlier and failed missions won’t necessarily need forensic outside investigation under reforms announced on Wednesday to rebalance safety and innovation in the burgeoning sector.

The proposed rule changes will see the requirement that ministers invite applicants to apply for a launch facility licence scrapped, ending the current three-stage process to deliver faster approvals.

The move comes as Gilmour Space Technologies endures a frustrating approval process with the Australian Space Agency and as a space technologies treaty with the US promises to boost the local sector.
