New policy checkers starts with govt’s biggest bill

A new Treasury unit set up by the Albanese government to forensically evaluate policy will start by looking at online employment services, a key part of the Commonwealth’s largest non-defence procurement at an expected cost of $7.3 billion.

After warning the current approach to employment services is being driven by ideology and poor data, Assistant Minister for Treasury and Employment Dr Andrew Leigh has ordered randomised controlled trials to investigate the various features of its growing online component.
