Misinformation laws proposed by the Albanese government to hold social media platforms to account for harmful content on their platforms could inadvertently be “abused” to the detriment of free speech, according to Facebook parent company Meta.
Fronting a parliamentary inquiry on Tuesday, local policy representatives from the company raised early concerns with the draft legislation that will impose more stringent requirements on digital platforms.
It comes a day after Meta announced increased funding for factcheckers at the Australian Associated Press, RMIT and Agence France-Presse to monitor misinformation ahead of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum later this year.
