National AI Centre stripped from CSIRO in $40m policy shift

Federal funding for artificial intelligence was reshaped in the Albanese government’s third Budget with an additional $40 million, but there is little direct industry investment as quantum and clean energy technologies were put at the heart of Future Made in Australia.

A new $40 million Ai package revealed Tuesday includes measures that will move the National AI Centre from the CSIRO and into the Industry department with $21.6 million over four years.

Another $15.7 million has been allocated over two years to coordinate AI policy development, regulation and engagement activities as the Albanese government finalises Australia’s first ever dedicated AI regulation.
