Morrison govt hit pause on digital ID

The former federal government put its digital identity regime into a “holding pattern” last year, slowing its progress and introducing a “high-risk” profile into the $600 million project.

Continued uncertainty under the current government has kept parts of the program “paused” and others operating with “no plans or roadmaps”, new documents reveal.

A major funding decision now looms ahead of next year’s Budget for Finance minister Katy Gallagher, who is being warned the private sector may abandon the government’s digital ID system if the delays continue.
