‘Massive’: Govt slashes red tape for rocket launches

The federal government has relaxed a requirement that space operators use third parties when applying to obtain launch licences or permits in a move that promises to save Australian businesses millions of dollars in future compliance fees.

The move has been applauded by parts of the sector, which believes the reform is a step in the right direction after the government pulled funding for the $1.2 billion National Space Mission for Earth Observation program.

The new rules, signed off by Industry minister Ed Husic last week, allow the use of in-house capability when applying for licenses or permits to conduct space and high-power rocket activities, instead of third parties.
