The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations is developing a new internal strategy that will see it focus on becoming a smarter buyer of tech services, after conceding too much outsourcing of key roles contributed to bungled platform projects.

At an inquiry into privatisation and outsourcing of government tech work, officials conceded a lack of “commercial savvy” saw it cede too much control to system integrators.

But they also detailed how the department turned one failed tech project into a Canberra exemplar.
