‘It makes no sense’: Student caps threaten research work

A Coalition plan to further cap international students would pull hundreds of millions of dollars out of Australia’s research system and shut out some of the world’s best early career researchers, universities are warning.

The opposition’s cap, announced on Sunday in a housing policy, would limit foreign student commencements at 25 per cent of enrolments.

It is estimated to lead to 30,000 fewer international students than Labor’s planned cap, putting further strain on a research funding model that relies heavily on the foreign fees to cross subsidise the full cost of projects.
