International student caps ‘risks our nation’s ambition’

International students will be capped at 2023 levels from next year as part of Education minister Jason Clare’s intervention in the tertiary sector that has sparked fierce backlash from research heavy universities.

Mr Clare on Tuesday revealed the long-awaited international student cap figure for higher education and vocational education and training providers will be 270,000 next year – an almost 20,000 decrease on 2024 levels.

Universities have warned limiting international students threatens their fee revenue, which is used to heavily subsidise research and make up other funding shortfalls, and that the proposed power to do it may be unconstitutional.
