A once-in-a-generation uplift of government services is underway in Australia, as governments of all stripes try to emulate the experience of well-known digital platforms and apps.

It helped the country take out fifth place on the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Digital Government Index earlier this year, ranking behind only South Korea, Denmark, the United Kingdom and Norway.

But with more than 94 per cent of all Australians now using at least one digital government service in their day-to-day, there are also no longer any excuses for a sub-par service.

In the future, the government has set its sights on “simple, secure and connected public services for all people” that build and maintain trust, leaving behind the automation failures of the past.

This year’s finalists in the coveted GovTech Project, Product or Service category, sponsored by Australian IT services firm Reason Group, were chosen from a formidable group of entrants.

The finalists in this category are:

  • MyLot (also a contender for the AI Industry Pioneer award)
  • The NSW Smart Sensing Network
  • Jobs and Skills Australia
  • Payble

The InnovationAus Awards for Excellence 2024 winners and finalists will be celebrated at a black-tie gala dinner at The Venue Alexandria in Sydney on Wednesday October 30. You can book your tickets here.

Behind the finalists:

MyLot is a Melbourne-based company has developed an AI-driven platform that is redefining the planning and development application process for Australian councils and applicants.

The NSW Smart Sensing Network, a government-funded innovation network that brings together universities, industry and government, is positioning NSW as a forerunner in the use of low-cost air quality sensing through OPENAIR.

Jobs and Skills Australia is a government entity that meets Australia’s present and future workforce needs. It has developed the Jobs and Skills Atlas, which provides a national overview of the labour market.

Payble is a Sydney-based company that modernises local government payments, specifically citizen-centric payment experiences, flexible billing options and simplified rate collection.

Since their inception in 2021, InnovationAus Awards for Excellence continue to spotlight pioneering companies that are driving innovation within this all-important category.

The judging criteria centres on five focus areas that are vital to success: commercial success; translation of intellectual property; the company’s impact on its sector; non-R&D innovations; and applied technologies.

Now in its fourth year, the 2024 awards are supported by the Australian Computer Society, Investment NSW, Department of Industry, Science and Resources, Technology Council of Australia, TechnologyOne, National Artificial Intelligence Centre, CSIRO’s ON Innovation Program, Reason Group, Q-CTRL, University of New South Wales, and IP Australia.
