Govt’s defence innovation reset needs more work

The Albanese government’s $3.4 billion defence innovation overhaul does not go far enough and needs more strategic work to “disrupt” a system that has for decades struggled to deliver capabilities to defence forces, according to a new report.

The report from the University of Western Australia’s Defence and Security Institute calls for a dedicated Defence Innovation Strategy and for Defence to cede control of a new industry and research accelerator by 2025.

The call for a more strategic approach comes just months after the government unveiled the most significant changes to defence innovation in decades.
