Govt to take time on PwC-inspired consultancy crackdown

The Albanese government has outlined a response to the PwC scandal that will focus on tax agents while wider changes for the consulting sector are considered. But experts say there is more that can be done now.

Billed by Treasurer Jim Chalmers as the “biggest crackdown on tax adviser misconduct in Australian history”, the response follows revelations a former PwC partner shared confidential information that was used to help multinationals avoid tax.

The government response includes a commitment to a whole of government approach to the “systemic issues” raised by the scandal that have already triggered multiple inquiries and a criminal investigation.
