Govt tech projects dodge trainee, gender targets

The federal government has stopped short of setting national targets for the participation of women and apprentices in major outsourced technology projects, even as similar quotas are set for the construction sector.

New procurement rules that come into effect in July will require that agencies negotiate targets with suppliers working on major technology projects. But unlike construction work, agencies will be able to negotiate the specific targets each time on major tech projects or avoid them altogether in some cases.

The policy, released earlier this month to operationalise the Australian Skills Guarantee, applies to suppliers in the ICT and construction sectors vying for direct Commonwealth procurements valued at $10 million or more.
