Govt takes another swing at misinformation law

New misinformation legislation will insert a bigger regulatory backstop into the struggling industry-led model and set a “high threshold” for the type of mis- and disinformation that digital platforms must combat.

The bill was introduced on Thursday by Communications minister Michelle Rowland after the government’s first attempt last year was panned by experts for vague definitions and opening the door to censorship.

Key changes include the higher threshold and clearer definitions, more protections for free speech, additional reporting, transparency and media literacy requirements for platform companies, and the inclusion of political information.
