The Albanese government has pushed back controversial legislation to bring more oversight and enforcement against online information until next year to better define terms and add a carve out for religious expression.
The initial bill was criticised by legal experts, online platforms and rights groups, with many agreeing the definition of misinformation was problematic and would make the regime difficult to enforce.
Thousands of individuals have also made critical submissions, after the Opposition and conservative media outlets railed against the proposal, claiming it would lead to censorship.
