The Albanese government will dismantle a rule forcing university students that failed half their courses to pay up front as part of its response to bold changes proposed by the Universities Accord, which is predicting a dramatic rise in demand for university degrees.

The removal of the so called 50 per cent pass rule, which was part of the Morrison government’s controversial ‘Job Ready Graduates’ project, is one of several access reforms Education minister Jason Clare will outline on Wednesday in response to the interim report.

The government will also lock in funding for universities for the next two years, invest in more Regional University Centres, extend demand driven funding to all First Nations students and work with states and territories on governance at the institutions.
