Govt defends blue hydrogen funding amid green push

The Albanese government has defended its investment in a controversial coal-to-hydrogen project with the Victorian state government because it honours a Turnbull-era commitment to Japanese partners.

Pre-commercialisation support for the Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC) project, a so-called ‘clean’ hydrogen development using carbon, capture, and storage (CCS), comes despite the federal government’s commitment to making Australia a green hydrogen superpower.

By the end of this financial year, the federal and Victorian governments will tip an extra $15 million into HESC to support a “preliminary investment plan and partial scale up of the [recently completed pilot project]”, according to the investment schedule.
