Govt criticised for ‘passing the buck’ on age verification


Child protection advocates and the federal Opposition have criticised the Albanese government’s decision not to introduce a mandatory age verification regime for online pornography and other adult content.

But digital rights organisations have strongly backed the “sensible” move, which came just hours before a similar laws in Texas was blocked by a federal judge for being unconstitutional and poorly defined.

On Thursday, the federal government released its long-awaited age verification roadmap, which said that forthcoming voluntary online safety codes, rather than age assurance technology, be used to protect children in the first instance.
