Funding furore as NSW flags innovation program cuts

New South Wales state Labor says the previous Coalition government had made unannounced cuts to the Small Business Innovation and Research (SBIR) program among a slew of other cuts to innovation programs, and has foreshadowed ‘tough calls’ on spending ahead of next week’s state budget.

NSW Labor claims the Coalition made $188 million worth of cuts to innovation, trade, tourism, and screen programs from the Department of Enterprise, Investment, and Trade – without announcing them – as a part of its pre-election budget update on March 8, just two weeks from the state election.

About a dozen programs overseen by Investment NSW, Destination NSW, and Create NSW have had their funding reduced or been cancelled outright.
