Federal police were issued three warrants to secretly assume control of a person’s online account last financial year to gather evidence about death threats and child abuse material, according to mandatory disclosures.
The ‘account takeover warrants’ are part of controversial powers introduced in 2021 that have been utilised each year since by law enforcement agencies. No application for account takeover warrants has ever been refused.
They are among more than 700 covert monitoring and electronic surveillance warrants issued last financial year, when only one application was rejected.
