eSafety chief leaves door open to binding online safety standards


Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant is “very close” to a decision on whether the online safety codes that have been developed by local tech industry associations will be accepted.

But she has left the door open to registering only a portion of the eight industry codes, and introducing binding standards developed by the regulator to cover the rest.

The proposed codes cover everything from social media platform services and search engines to hosting services and internet carriage.
