Federal public servants have been urged not to underestimate the cost of digital projects or exaggerate expected benefits in new guidance that follows around $1 billion in failed tech projects over the last two years.
The advice from the Digital Transformation Agency, released on Monday, also recommends that agencies avoid an over-reliance on consultants and instead use in-house expertise as the government’s outsourcing savings drive continues.
Developed with the University of Sydney’s John Grill Institute at a cost of almost $30,000, the guidance comes as the DTA looks to play a more active role in providing assurance, monitoring and remediation advice on digital projects.
