Australians will be able to use a digital identity to witness documents online before the end of the year, removing the need for time-consuming visits to a Justice of the Peace (JP), with the federal government now consulting on the proposed reforms.
As the government fends off claims it has lost all momentum on digital ID, the Attorney-General’s Department has quietly released a discussion paper on the proposed changes that will eventually allow more services to be onboarded to myGov.
It represents a major step towards declarations and deeds being executed digitally, a vision the Albanese Government – and the Morrison Government before it – has been consulting on since the pandemic made e-signatures the norm.
