Digital ID laws to fix ‘class’ blindspots: Shorten

The federal government’s digital identity regime will mitigate a digital class divide by making robust identity proofing more accessible to all Australians, according to Government Services minister Bill Shorten.

Speaking at the Tech in Government conference on Tuesday, Mr Shorten confirmed that the forthcoming digital identity legislation would enable more Australians to access the government provided digital ID at identity proofing level three (IP3).

IP3 — the highest level of verification offered under the federal government’s Trust Digital Identity Framework (TDIF) without requiring in-person checks — is required to access government welfare and related services.
