DFAT officials, contractors investigated over dodgy deals

Investigations have been launched into more than a dozen officials and contractors at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Australian Passport Office over its cowboy procurements.

The probes and referrals were triggered by auditor general findings that the office for years broke government-wide procurement rules and in some case was acting unethically when dealing with technology and labour hire suppliers.

After initially resisting launching its own inquiries, further evidence forced DFAT to bring in specialist investigators that confirmed the auditor general’s concerns.
