Australia’s defence industry strategy should be more closely aligned to broader industrial development policy in order to build national capability in areas of strategic importance that can quickly scale as the risk of major conflict rises.
A new report from ANU’s Strategic and Defence Studies Centre and the national employer association Ai Group argues that a locally based defence industry should be seen as a national capability in its own right, rather than as simply a capability input.
The report recommends that defence industry should be embedded within – and managed – as part of Australia’s broader national industry structure and policy.
