Defence export control exemptions won’t be subject to US oversight

The US government has given Australia the all-clear to exempt more countries from its upgraded Defence trade controls regime despite recent controversial reforms to align the scheme more closely with the superpower.

The two AUKUS nations are progressing reforms to their respective regimes to create a export licence-free environment for technology sharing, primarily to overcome the US’ International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) barriers.

At the end of March 2023, the parliament passed reforms that would support the removal of up to 70 per cent of defence export licenses for technologies transferred from the US to Australia.
