Australia’s economy-wide digital ID scheme is launching with a host of technical challenges and without a genuine business case, according to a technology expert who warns the government is fumbling crucial early public buy in.
The Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s Dr Rajiv Shah flagged the issues after examining the system that has been in development for a decade and already tipped to cost more than $1 billion.
He said gaps are creating practical challenges but have also allowed room for a damaging big brother narrative, undermining critical early adoption and showing the need for “a fundamental reset” of the government’s communication strategy.
